Watercolor Illustration
Project Description: Students will be illustrating an Imaginary Fantasy Creature using watercolor Techniques to add color and texture. Students may use other materials besides watercolor such as marker and colored pencil for additional details and effects.
What is Book Illustration?
Book illustration is a form of fine art that is used to create drawn pictures and images for books.
Illustrations are meant to be much more than pretty pictures, however. They will usually help add to or enhance the story in some way.
Generally speaking, illustrations are more commonly found in children’s books. Some children’s books may consist of nothing but pictures, although many children’s books also have words as well. Not only do these pictures add visual appeal for a child, but they can also help a child understand the words of the story as well. As a child becomes more adept at reading and understanding stories, they will typically begin reading stories with fewer illustrations.
Illustrations are also commonly found in some books for adults as well. Instructional books, for instance, often contain a number of diagrams and charts, which help readers see each step of a particular process. Medical and health books, along with wildlife and nature books, also usually have a number of illustrations as well.
Step 1: Draw out your design with pencil. (Creature must be original and design balanced as if your are illustrating a page from a children's book.)
Step 2: Start adding the light (watered down) colors first and work your way up to the darker shades.
Step 3: Add needed details and outlines.

Goals (a.k.a Learning Targets)
-Overall interesting subject of a Fantasy Creature. (No copies.) Think about your background and scene. Lay it out as if it were a page from a book or scene in a movie.
-Page is balanced and space is used well. Think about the size of your creature compared to the background space.
-At least 3 watercolor techniques are used within the painting.
-Good layering and color mixing. Do NOT use white watercolor paint (unless you discuss with me the reasons). Build your layers from light to dark.
