Scratch Art
Project Description: Students will create a drawing of their subject using contour and directional lines. (Subject should reflect or can be shaded using directional lines) Students will also start thinking and using values with lines.
Directional Lines: Lines can lead the eye in a path around an image. And they can also be used as a powerful way to express something to the viewer. Directional lines express a variety of messages. Diagonal lines, for example, express the sense of energy and give movement to a piece. Horizontal lines, on the other hand, give a piece a sense of calmness and rest. And vertical lines portray structure and strength. Only a single line is necessary to communicate an emotion, whether it be sadness, joy, worry, anger, dejection or exuberance.
Values: Value is defined as the relative lightness or darkness of a color. It is an important tool for the designer/artist, in the way that it defines form and creates spatial illusions. Contrast of value separates objects in space, while gradation of value suggests mass and contour of a contiguous surface.

Scratch Art Demo with Color Added.
GOALS (OBJECTIVES):
-CONTOUR LINES to create their sketch, then use those lines as guides for their directional lines.
-DIRECTIONAL LINES to apply shape and form to their subject.
-VALUES shown in appropriate areas. (light areas scratched in more, dark less or untouched)
