Salt Dough Sculpture
Project Description: Students will mix their own salt dough and create a sculpture around a glass container (bottle or jar). Students will then paint their sculpture with acrylic paint after it has been baked and sprayed with a clear coat. Other embellishments can be added. This lesson is a continuation of clay alternatives.
Salt dough is a modelling material made from a mixture of flour, salt and water. It can be used to make ornaments and sculptures, and can be dried in the oven or microwave. ... Properly mixed dough does not crumble or crack. It is a dense, and hence heavy, material, which can cause issues with large designs.
In plastic art, relief sculpture is any work which projects from but which belongs to the wall, or other type of background surface, on which it is carved. Reliefs are traditionally classified according to how high the figures project from the background. Also known as relievo, relief sculpture is a combination of the two-dimensional pictorial arts and the three-dimensional sculptural arts. Thus a relief, like a picture, is dependent on a background surface and its composition must be extended in a plane in order to be visible. Yet at the same time a relief also has a degree of real three-dimensionality, just like a proper sculpture.

How to mix salt dough
GOALS (Objectives):
-Dough mixed properly.
-Use knowledge of working with clay to make different shapes, forms and attaching pieces.
-At least 50% of the jar or bottle is covered.
-Dough added should be a sculpture either abstract or subjective
-Sculpture should show 3D relief sculpture elements.
*Think about the shape of the jar or bottle to make decisions about your sculpture. Could the sculpture wrap around the bottle? What would make sense on a rounded surface? How can the entire 360 degree surface be used? Salt dough is heavy and very flimsy, so consider balance and weight when making decisions about the design.
