Gesture Drawing
Project Description:
You will be trying a new drawing technique called Gesture Drawing. You will choose still life or living subjects to draw using gesture drawing techniques. After the first day demonstration, every day during the Gesture Drawing week you will be given subject categories to choose from and you will work on completing at least one drawing per day of your chosen subjects. You will be using only ballpoint pens for this assignment and will continue to try to recognize contour, cross-contour and shadows in subjects and interpret them with gesture drawing. No erasing!
A gesture drawing is a laying in of the action, form, and pose of a model/figure. Typical situations involve an artist drawing a series of poses taken by a model in a short amount of time, often as little as 30 seconds, or as long as 2 minutes. Gesture drawing is often performed as a warm-up for a life drawing session, but is a skill that must be cultivated for its own sake.
In less typical cases the artist may be observing people or animals going about normal activities with no special effort to pause for the artist. For example, drawing from people on the street, performers, athletes, or drawing animals at the zoo.

Week Project:
You will be working on new drawings every day this week.
Day 1: Pass the subject drawing practice.
Day 2 & 3: Pick 2 subjects to try gesture drawing techniques. 1/2 of class you will work on one and 1/2 of the class you will work on the other.
Day 4: You will get the entire class period to work on one subject. Add details and shading and form using gesture lines and what you learned from the contour line project.
At the end of the week you will pick your favorite drawing to turn in and display.
