Tempera Texture Painting
Project Description:
You will be creating an Abstract painting by layering warm and cool colors. You will be first creating the background with items that are textured by creating Implied Texture. Then the next steps involve mixing tempera paint with flour, then shaving cream and glue, then cornstarch to create a dough.
Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.
***Think of a plan of how you want to apply your designs and colors. When creating an abstract picture I usually think of a real subject and simplify the shapes the point where it doesn't look realistic anymore.
Here are a couple of abstract painters that were inspiration for this project:
Matisse and Jill Freebird

STEP 1
IMPLIED TEXTURE
Pick a warm or cool color for one main block of background color. Then over the top of that pick another warm or cool color (background color must be dry if you are picking an opposite color scheme). Then find things that are textured. You will paint that textured item and stamp it onto your background.
STEP 2
Flour Texture
You will pick either a warm or cool color. You can do more than one if you wish and mix that paint with some flower to thicken it up. You will probably want to use something other than a paint brush (depending on how thick it is) to apply it to your painting.
STEP 3
Puff Paint
Mix your new color(s) with 1 part white glue and 1 part shaving cream. Apply to your painting.
STEP 4
Dough
Mix paint with cornstarch until you get a playdough consistancy. I'm still experimenting with this mix and will tell you details at a later date.
