Positive vs. Negative Space in Sculpture
In order to begin carving with any medium you need to understand the difference between POSITIVE and NEGATIVE SPACE in art. While you carve you will removing the negative space to reveal the positive space of the subject. Since this is a 3D peice you will need to think about the space on all sides of the subject.
The area around positive shapes, the background, is negative space. A solid piece of sculpture occupies space, and makes the space around it come to life. In fact, sculptors think of the entire composition, the interplay between solid and space, when they create a work of art.

GOALS (Learning Targets)
-Tools used properly to slowly carve away the negative space to reveal the positive space of the subject.
-Recognizable subject created.
-Subject is 3D either as a relief or 3D on all sides.
-Details added to give subject character and shows further control of the tools.
