Printmaking 3 Ways
Monoprint, Collagraph Print, Foam Print
Project Description: Students will create one print using three printing methods, monoprint, collagraph print and printing with foam. With all three techniques each print created will involve 3 layers of color.

Step one: Monoprint Layer 1
-Lay out foil at your table and tape down the corners. Paint a few dots of paint onto the foil into a rectangle about 6" x 9". Use a brush or other tools to create texture within the paint. Lay a piece of paper over the paint and rub the back of the paper. Gently peel off the paper and set aside to dry. Tip: If you make your paint too thick you won't see any texture designs within the paint. You can also mix colors and textures. Step two: Collagraph Layer 2 -Take two pieces of foam that are 6" x 9". Cut one of the foam pieces into various shapes. Peel off the sticker on the back and attach to the other foam piece. Keep doing this until there are a good amount of pieces covering the 6" x 9" piece of foam. (There should be some open space. Use a brayer to roll ink onto the foam pieces until completely covered. Place the foam in the middle of the Monoprint from the last step. Use a clean brayer to roll on the back of the foam to press shapes into the paper to make an overall good print. Peel off the foam and set aside to dry. Tip: If you see ink printing from your background inbetween your shapes, take a wet papertowel and wipe off the extra ink before printing. Step three: Foam Print Layer 3 -Now think about the main subject of your print. You will draw and indent this subject into a 4" x 6" piece of foam using a ballpoint pen. Any areas where you indent will not get ink. Again roll the ink onto the foam using a brayer making sure the raised parts of the foam are covered in ink. Place your subject anywhere on the already printed area of the paper. Roll the back of the foam with a clean brayer. Peel off the foam and set aside to dry. Tip: Again, if there are parts that are printing that you don't want, be sure to clean off those areas before printing. Also, if your print is not turning out clear you may need to re-indent. |
