Challenge #3: Backflow Incense Burner
Project Description: Third project in our challenge series where students will need to determine the best methods for building a particular project. For this assignment you are creating what's called a Backflow Incense Burner. These type of burners are different from typical ones where the smoke cascades downwards because the backflow incense cones have a hole through the middle and the burner has a reservoir for the smoke to flow through. The special backflow incense cones create a thicker and heavier smoke than regular incense smoke does.
Incense is used for aesthetic reasons, and in therapy, meditation, and ceremony. It may also be used as a simple deodorant or insectifuge. Direct-burning incense (or "combustible incense") is lit directly by a flame and then fanned or blown out, leaving a glowing ember that smoulders and releases a smoky fragrance.
Incense is composed of aromatic plant materials, often combined with essential oils. The forms taken by incense differ with the underlying culture, and have changed with advances in technology and increasing number of uses.
Incense can generally be separated into two main types: "indirect-burning" and "direct-burning". Indirect-burning incense (or "non-combustible incense") is not capable of burning on its own, and requires a separate heat source. Direct-burning incense (or "combustible incense") is lit directly by a flame and then fanned or blown out, leaving a glowing ember that smoulders and releases a smoky fragrance. Direct-burning incense is either a paste formed around a bamboo stick, or a paste that is extruded into a stick or cone shape.

GOALS (Learning Targets):
-Burner needs to have a well with a hole where the cone will sit and burn.
-Burner needs to have a way for the smoke to flow out of the well into the next level of the burner. I'll be looking to see if you figured out the direction you would like the smoke to flow for your burner and an area where the smoke will land at the end.
-Overall interesting structure. Should be visually appealing. Since you are dealing with smoke that actively flows through your piece this give you a new level to form your creativity.
